The San Mateo County Stand Down is created for homeless and at-risk of becoming homeless veterans and is modeled after the Stand Down concept used during the Vietnam Way to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment. Stand Down afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health, and overall sense of well-being. San Mateo County will bring these services and other resources to one location, making them more accessible to homeless Veterans.
Veterans who attend the event will be provided with the following social and medical services:
For Stand Down to be a successful event, we need community volunteers. All volunteers are welcome to join us in this life-changing experience. Roles range from equipment set-up & tear-down, food preparation, paperwork and data collection, registration and many other are needed.
Registered volunteers will receive a free T-Shirt, Food and Water.
