Now Hiring - Community Affairs Manager

The County Manager's Office of the County of San Mateo seeks well-qualified candidates for the position of Community Affairs Manager.

Reporting to the County Manger's Office, the Community Affairs Manager will develop and implement strategies for government and community initiatives to enhance the County's image and support the government affairs functions within the region, which may include, among other things, event planning and execution, community outreach, community development, landlord/tenant relations, community investment, coordinating volunteerism, development of regionalism, business sustainability and economic development, strategic development of veterans related affairs, immigrant orientation and investment, Neighborhood Response Team coordination, and strategic use of local programming assets.  The Manager will be responsible for creating strategies to work with our most vulnerable populations and bridge the gap between these groups and County services.

 Examples Of Duties:

  • Develop, coordinate, and execute government-focused community activities across a designated regional areas of San Mateo County.
  • Support government affairs objectives by enhancing the County's image and effectiveness in the communities served
  • Establish, build, and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with community leaders, not-for-profit organizations, key corporate departments, and other internal and external third party constituencies
  • Work with other government agencies to develop a strategic community strategy for the region, including identifying and coordinating community events, sponsorships, and charitable contributions designed to support government affairs business objectives and policy initiatives
  • Direct and develop strategies for the North Fair Oaks Outreach Team 2.0 as it expands outreach activities throughout the County to achieve specific and articulable goals 
  • Direct strategies and activities that promote County visibility, build a strong County image and increase public awareness of the County's commitment to the communities it serves
  • Maximize local programming and other internal assets, including, but not limited to television production capabilities and public service announcements to enhance the County's community presence and to meet government affairs related objectives
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets related to these objectives
  • Track region-wide participation levels for community initiatives, assist in development of collateral materials and work with County departments to meet departmental objectives
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 Qualifications:

  • Significant community or government affairs experience; minimum of 5 years in government, public, community, or related work or any combination thereof
  • Experience creating strong working relationships with school districts, community-based organizations, and service providers
  • Proven success cultivating and maintaining positive relationships with external constituencies, including community partners, government officials, and other government and quasi-governmental organizations
  • Experience creating strong relationships with established influential diversity groups
  • Experience working with immigrant populations along with a strong understanding of their needs and challenges
  • Familiarity with economic development principles and practices
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and keep numerous projects on track and on budget
  • Proven project management experience, particularly with leading cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated results in developing and implementing successful programs and campaigns and executing events
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Power Point, Outlook, Publishing, etc.)
  • Bachelor's Degree, with a preference for a Master's Degree or equivalent education
